Day 2:
Sightseeing for all. Kangerlussuaq on your own or optional excursions: Tundra tour and northern lights tour

After today’s breakfast, it’s time to explore what Kangerlussuaq offers.

Sightseeing in Kangerlussuaq

This tour provides a great overview of the area, starting from the airport in the town center and moving out into the stunning surrounding nature. We’ll hear about the area’s long history, from its origins as an Inuit hunting ground and a former American military base to its transformation into a Greenlandic settlement. Kangerlussuaq once served as Greenland’s central airport, a hub for travelers arriving from Denmark before heading to towns along Greenland’s coast.

The rest of the day is yours to explore independently, or you can join a tundra safari and a northern lights tour.

Tundra Safari (part of the excursion package)

On this trip, we venture into Greenland’s tundra landscape. Accompanied by a local guide, we embark on an exciting safari through Kangerlussuaq’s vast and rugged nature. There are excellent opportunities to spot musk oxen, reindeer, and perhaps even an Arctic hare. The tundra’s flora and fauna are fascinating and perfectly adapted to the extreme climate. Our guide will share insights into this unique ecosystem and tell stories about Greenland’s wildlife. This day of extraordinary nature experiences brings you close to Kangerlussuaq’s diverse and wild animal life.

Northern Lights Tour (part of the excursion package)

Don’t miss the chance to witness Greenland’s most stunning northern lights in the evening. Kangerlussuaq is one of the best places in Greenland to see the aurora borealis due to its very stable climate. We strongly recommend joining this tour. We’ll drive from the base into the evening darkness, hoping to see the incredible northern lights. Watching the shimmering, greenish light dancing across the sky is an unforgettable experience, adding another remarkable memory to your growing collection of impressions from Greenland.

Day 3:
Kangerlussuaq on your own or an optional excursion to the Ice Sheet at Point 660

Today, you’re on your own, or you can join a tour of the inland ice at Point 660.

The Kangerlussuaq area is the only inhabited place not on Greenland’s coast but in Greenland’s interior. It has a continental climate with very stable weather conditions.

Ice Sheet Point 660 (part of the excursion package)

If you have purchased the excursion package, today you will go on an excursion to the Ice Sheet and the so-called Point 660, where you can get right up and walk on the Inland Ice. The tour goes by special vehicle from the town and approximately 25 km to the ice sheet. The guide will tell you about the ice and the dynamic moraine landscape, and you will have the unique opportunity to stand with many meters of thick and very old ice under your feet!

Be aware that ice is a living entity, so where you step onto the ice can vary from year to year – and sometimes the ice is easily accessible, while other times it’s a little harder to get onto it. But you can rest assured that we move around in safe places.

Day 4:
Kangerlussuaq on your own or optional excursion to the Russell Glacier

Today, you can go out on some of the routes you have visited yet. Or you can join an excursion to an amazing glacier.

Excursion to the Russell Glacier (part of the excursion package)

Over the years, many travelers have had great experiences at the Russell Glacier. On tour to the Russell Glacier, you get to experience the spectacular glacier, which is an impressive sight with its vertical wall of ice rising to 40 meters. You may also be lucky enough to spot musk oxen, reindeer or even a hare roaming in the hills.

A day on your own or optional dogsledding

Another day with fun. We highly recommend the two-hour dogsled trip that is part of the excursion package.

A dogsled trip across the frozen fjord is a wonderful and unique experience. Find the balance, sit back, and enjoy nature and the fresh air, wearing warm sealskin clothing – and always keep your camera ready.
