Adventure North of the Arctic Circle

8 days around Nuuk and Sisimiut

Clear blue skies, piercing white snow, packs of sled dogs, and a chance to watch the northern lights unfold in the night sky. This tour gives you a multitude of possibilities to create an amazing Arctic winter adventure!

Experience an Arctic Capital

Nuuk is a modern Arctic capital with lots of culture, history, sailing, and nature. There are many experiences to be had both in the city center and the beautiful fjords in Nuuk’s hinterland. You get to try a little bit of everything!

Arctic Adventure in Sisimiut

The journey continues to Sisimiut, where you spend the next five days. This picturesque town lies just inside the Polar Circle. It is the northernmost town in Greenland to have an ice-free harbor throughout the winter season, and, at the same time, it is the southernmost town to have sled dogs. With 5,500 inhabitants, Sisimiut is Greenland’s second largest town and boasts an interesting mix of businesses, including fishing and hunting using dog sleds, while young people study to become Arctic engineers.

Arctic winter

There is no shortage of fine, clean snow here during winter. In February and March, you can experience a proper Arctic winter in Nuuk and Sisimiut with average temperatures dropping to around minus 15 celsius. During cold spells, the temperature might drop as far as minus 30-40C. Fortunately, it never feels as cold as it sounds, thanks to low humidity, bright sun, and clear blue skies.

Dog sledding and northern lights

There are many ways to explore winter-clad Sisimiut, and you have an abundance of opportunities to try dog sledding, hikes, cross-country, and alpine skiing, boat trips, museum visits, and watching local artists at work. And when the day is over, sit in the hot tubs of the hotel and turn your gaze upwards to marvel at the magic of the northern lights unfolding in the sky. A real Greenlandic winter adventure!

Day program

Rebecca Gustafsson - Visit Greenland
Day 1:
Arrival in Nuuk - welcome meeting and optional Fjord Adventure tour

We fly with Air Greenland from Copenhagen to Nuuk. Ahead awaits a 4,5-hour flight and an 8-day winter adventure.

After you check in and unpack in your room at Hotel Hans Egede Express, the guide will hold an information meeting. At the meeting, you’ll get information about experiences in Nuuk, dining, and excursion options, and can confirm the excursions you’ve already booked from home. It is also possible to book excursions at the meeting.

After the meeting, it’s time to get to know Nuuk at your own pace and get ideas for what to do today and tomorrow.

Nuuk has only 19,500 inhabitants, but you’ll experience a vibrant “big city” as it is a government city with many cultural and educational institutions. Nuuk is growing constantly and is now about 10 kilometers from end to end. You’ll find concerts, theater, museums, and exhibitions. Sports are central to many, so you can go hiking, skiing, sailing, running, strength training, yoga, and even swimming. Since it’s winter, the ski lift is a favorite spot for the city’s citizens.

You can read more about Nuuk here.

If you’ve purchased the excursion package, it’s time for a boat trip on Nuuk Fjord.

Fjord adventure (optional)

You’ll soon experience Greenland from the sea. It’s a wonderful boat trip, and we’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the views of some of the most beautiful mountains in the Nuuk Fjord.

We sail out of Nuuk and into the large fjord system, the second largest in the world. The mountains in the Nuuk Fjord are beautiful and rugged, many towering above the sea. On our way into the fjord, we sail past the city of Nuuk itself, and from the water, you get a sense of how big Nuuk really is.

We may also pass some beautiful icebergs. In the Nuuk area, they are not as big as in Disko Bay, but they are still beautiful and impressive.

After enjoying a cup of coffee or tea, we sail on, and, who knows, we might be lucky enough to see some wildlife. Out here in the fjord, we’re also closer to Sermitsiaq, the beautiful mountain that is one of Nuuk’s most famous landmarks.

Try one of the many wonderful restaurants Nuuk has to offer in the evening.

Day 2:
Nuuk on your own or Sightseeing and Snowshoe Northern Lights Tour (optional)

Today can be spent at your own pace, and the beautifully situated capital city offers many exciting experiences.

If you have purchased the excursion package, you can look forward to a city tour and tonight, the highlight of your day, a Northern Lights snowshoe trip.

Sightseeing in Nuuk (part of the excursion package)

The city tour, a unique part of your excursion package, includes a visit to the Greenland National Museum. Here, you’ll have the privilege of seeing finds from all time periods and civilizations in Greenland. After about 30 minutes at the museum, we continue around the area called Kolonihavnen. This is where most of the original houses from the 17th and 18th centuries still stand. On the way we pass Hans Egede’s house, the sculpture of the Mother of the Sea and the controversial statue of Hans Egede at the Greenland Cathedral.

We then head to ‘Kalaaliaraq,’ the traditional market where locally caught fish, seals, and reindeer are sold.

Now, we head towards Greenland’s government buildings and then the Greenland’s Cultural Center Katuaq, where our tour ends. You’re now as central as you can be, with great shopping opportunities. And many other exciting things to do.

The next program item in the excursion package is a Northern Lights tour. It’s a good idea to get some dinner before you leave. Nuuk offers many places to eat, so look around, ask your guide, or visit the hotel reception.

Northern Lights snowshoeing on Quassussuaq Mountain (part of the excursion package)

Experience the Northern Lights even closer from a mountain peak! We head out in the evening and are equipped with snowshoes and headlamps. We walk up to the top of Quassussuaq, which, at 430 meters, towers gently over the airport.
It’s further away from the city lights up here, which makes the Northern Lights experience brighter. As a bonus, you also see Greenland’s capital from above, with the many street lights shining down on the snow. The guide will ensure you have something warm to sit on, and then we’ll turn off the headlamps and enjoy the view while sipping a hot cup of tea.

Day 3:
Flight to Sisimiut – info meeting and optional sightseeing and a sleddog visit

The trip continues to the coastal town of Sisimiut. The hotel bus picks you up at the airport, and take you to 4-star Hotel Sisimiut, which will be your comfortable base for the next five nights. Check-in is followed by an information meeting with the local guide. At the meeting, the guide will tell you about the town, the area, places to eat and go, and you can confirm the excursions you booked from home. It is also possible to book excursions at the meeting.

If you have purchased the excursion package, the information meeting will be followed by a cultural-historical bus tour of the town, giving give you an impression of the town and what life is like north of the Polar Circle. You will also meet the sleddogs.

Sightseeing by bus (part of the excursion package)

The trip starts at the old heliport, which was one of the only gateways to Sisimiut until 1998. Today, the landing site is used as a dog kennel and the building is a club house for the local youth. Our tour through town will stop at the local market which is full of freshly caught fish and game. We pass the town hall on the way to inspect the original hunting and fishing houses which are still standing today. We continue to the town’s highest vantage point to take in the impressive view towards the south. Finally, we visit the old town in the center where original buildings from colonial times in the 1700s are now home to the city’s museum.

Dog visit (part of the excursion package)

This is the experience for anyone who loves dogs and wants to learn more about sled dogs. You’ll get a brief introduction to life with the sled dogs and their history in Greenland. You can even touch some dogs and take pictures with them, but always check with the dogs’ owners first, as they are not pets.

Hotel Sisimiut
Day 4:
Sisimiut on your own or winter hiking and winter safari in UTV (optional)

Today is yours to enjoy Sisimiut. With nature on your doorstep and culture and shops in town there are plenty of entertainment opportunities, however Hotel Sisimiut also offers a range of excursions – and outdoor hot tubs!

If you purchased the excursion package, today there are two excellent adventures in the program!

Winter Hiking (part of the excursion package)

Are we going hiking again, you may think? Yes! The Winter Hiking Trip focuses on snowshoeing. Waking in snowshoes is for big and small alike, and it requires no experience, as there is a guide that will help teach you about the use of snowshoes and rods.

We walk towards the town’swaterworks, which is right at the end of the famous Arctic Circle Trail. We cross the path and move along the mountainside towards Lake Nilliasup, which is one of the two lakes that provide drinking water for the whole town. The lake is frozen so we can cross it in a southern direction and continue across a moraine, shaped by the enormous power of ancient melting glaciers.

In the area, there are lots of polar foxes and snow hares, which we will try to spot and perhaps find one of their caves along the road. Depending on the amount of snow, on the mountains, we will be able to see traces of scrub strips and various soil species from glacial movements and the melting of the ice.

At the end of the moraine, we can look out towards the David Strait and the breathtaking view of the archipelago and the Polar Circle area south of Sisimiut. Here we will take a well-deserved break and get a refreshment.

There is also time to take beautiful pictures before we return home. On the return trek, we cross the mountain to another moraine and continue towards Sisimiut’s cross-country ski trails. Before returning to Hotel Sisimiut, we stop at the frozen lake, Spejdersøen (Scouts’ Lake), which is at placed the center of activities during the winter season.

Winter Safari (part of the excursion package)

The winter safari is a trip into the amazing mountain landscape on our “monster trailer.” It is a huge sled that is being pulled by a snowmobile. On the trip, you get several stops, so there is ample opportunity to take pictures and enjoy nature.

Nature is right outside your door, and you will very quickly get a sense of the difference between civilization and the wild nature. You sit on the big sled and experience Sisimiut’s hinterland. The tour’s route goes through the winter playground and, on the way back, we stop on a plateau so you can enjoy the view of Sisimiut and the Davis Strait. As you are being pulled on a sled, nothing is required of you (other than holding onto the sled), so everyone can go on this tour.

Day 5:
Sisimiut on your own or dog sledding and snowmobile (optional)

Today is at your disposal. You can participate in excursions from the hotel, or you can take a walk on your own in the second-largest town in Greenland. If you’ve purchased the excursion package, today there is a dog sledding or snowmobile tour. Tomorrow’s program is the same, but you’ll go on the second of the two excursions.

Four-hour dog sled ride (part of the excursion package)

Dog sledding is a truly authentic activity in Greenland. For thousands of years, the hunter and his dogs have lived and worked together in this harsh, yet stunning part of the world. The sled dog is, therefore, an important part of Greenlandic culture and used to be the only means of transportation when the landscape is frozen and covered in snow. This is where you will experience complete peace, with only the occasional interruption by the sled driver shouting orders to his dogs.

You will be sitting still on the sled while taking in the scenery, so make sure you are dressed in warm clothes. The sled trip will take you to the foot of Niujarfik, a natural stop before the steep climb northeast of Sisimiut. There will be a short break before the return journey – the perfect time to take photos while the sled driver untangles the leads. The price does not include rental of polar clothing and boots, and you will be two persons on each sled.

This sled trip gives you a taste of dog sledding. If you think you can handle more of the winter life in the company of dogs, the hotel can organize a longer trip for you. You can organize this during your stay in Sisimiut.

Intro to Snowmobiling and Trip to the Backcountry (part of the excursion package)

Have you never driven a snowmobile before? Not to worry! This tour is perfect for beginners. Your tour guide introduces you to basic driving skills, after which you start driving on a training track.

With your newly acquired basic driving skills, you can safely go to the hinterland. The trip there is the hotel’s most popular snowmobile trip because it has a bit of it all. On the trip, you drive on long stretches, on smaller inclines, and tracks at a moderate pace through scenic paths into the mountains.

The terrain is hilly and has good descents and climbs. In addition to the sense of excitement and freedom as you drive the snowmobile through the cool air, the absolute highlight of the trip is the spectacular view of the David Strait and the endless view of the rugged winter landscape of Qerrortusup Majoriaa.

During the trip, there will be a longer stop to get a snack and something hot to drink and, of course, there will be lots of opportunities to take pictures.

Many people get excited about snowmobiling, and understandably so. It’s super fun and exciting.

Snowmobile into the wilderness (extra optional purchase)

This wilderness snowmobile tour is perfect for those hooked on snowmobiles after the intro tour. On this adventure, you’ll ride solo and get deeper into the land around the Arctic Circle Trail. You’ll travel through various terrains, including frozen lakes and fjords, narrow mountain climbs, scenic panoramic viewpoints, and even a crossing of the dog sled trail. Along the way, we’ll stop at a small cabin by the frozen fjord for a packed lunch and a rest.

Previous ATV or snowmobile experience is recommended. Children under 18 sit in the back as passengers.

At night, the hotel offers a farewell dinner (excluding drinks), consisting of a delicious Greenlandic buffet.
