Day 3:
Excursion to the Ice Sheet – Point 660 (optional)

Breakfast at Polar Lodge awaits you again this morning, where you can also decide what the day will bring. If you’ve purchased the excursion package, you’ll head to the Ice Sheet.

Tour to Point 660 (part of the excursion package)

Today, we embark on an unforgettable journey to the Ice Sheet, where we drive through the impressive and dramatic landscape in a 4×4 vehicle. We cross the vast Sandfly Plain along winding gravel roads and finally reach Point 660, one of the most accessible spots on the Ice Sheet.

Here, we can step onto the massive ice and enjoy the stunning view of the endless white horizon. Our guide will share knowledge about the Ice Sheet’s history, its impact on the climate, and how it has shaped the local nature.

Please note that the ice is a dynamic entity, meaning it can vary from year to year where we can access it. Sometimes, it’s easily accessible, while it may be a bit more challenging to reach at other times. However, you can rest assured that we always move in safe areas.

After our visit to the ice, you can relax by taking a short walk around Kangerlussuaq. Kangerlussuaq is one of the places in Greenland with the largest road network, so it’s possible to explore widely without getting lost.

Another day at your leisure, or join one of the tours offered in the excursion package.

Tundra Safari (part of the excursion package)

Today’s adventure starts with an exciting tundra safari, where we head into the Arctic landscape to experience the unique flora and fauna. With our experienced guide, we search for musk oxen, reindeer, and other Arctic animals that inhabit the area. The guide will explain the tundra’s ecosystem, the wild animals’ adaptations to the harsh climate, and the incredible biodiversity found in Greenland. We often stop to take photos and better understand the tough yet beautiful nature.

We will learn about the glacier’s significance to the Arctic climate and how it’s affected by global climate change. We’ll have the opportunity to stand close to the glacier, hear it creak as the ice slowly moves, and perhaps even witness a small calving event, where the ice breaks off and crashes into the surrounding landscape. After we visit the glacier, we can take a short hike around the glacier area, where we can enjoy the magnificent views.
